Celebrating Family

I've never really been one to embrace my culture, but after reuniting with family members whom I haven't seen in years, and seeing younger cousins you remember when they were "this tall" and now they have their own children, it's something that makes you just feel good. My Aunt was kind enough to treat us to a Mariachi band, but nothing was as special as seeing my Grandma light up as they serenaded her.

Mom & I designed coffee mugs together too for all her siblings using my photography.

It's invigorating to have a blog post that my heart is in these days.
I'm so proud of my family.

Birthday Girl

It's been quite an exhausting week with 3 straight days of driving 8-14 hours each, but I arrived on Saturday night to the beautiful town of Truckee. We celebrated my 7/11 birthday last night at The Cottonwood on the patio overlooking the rustic rail town.

Chocolate Key Lime Pie & Berry Crisp with Vanilla Ice Cream

Buerre blanc Asian Basa fish with rice and veggies. Mmm!

Ring courtesy of Anjolee jewlers. More info soon!

P.s. Have you seen the new extreme photography show From The Edge with Peter Lik on The Weather Channel? I watched it on Wednesday night from my hotel in Flagstaff, AZ and they were shooting Death Valley, which I drove along the outskirts of on Thursday. Though I would have loooved to attempt photographing it, probably wouldn't have been smartest idea with my cat and long 14 hour drive.
But still there is a serene beauty to the desert. Maybe someday.

2 Year Blogiversary!

I can't believe it's been 2 years today since I've been blogging! To celebrate, Grandma and I whipped up a Texas Sheet Cake to celebrate... Mmmmm!

Texas Sheet Cake
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 cup boiling water
1 stick of butter
1/2 cup of oil
1/2 cup of buttermilk
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
4 tbps cocoa powder
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs

Frosting
1 stick of softened butter
1 tsp vanilla
7 tbsp of evaporated milk
1 box of confectioner's sugar
4 tbsp of cocoa powder
1 cup of chopped nuts (optional)

Boil one cup of water, remove from heat. Add stick of butter and oil to pot. Set aside. Blend dry ingredients in one bowl. Mix wet ingredients in another bowl. Slowly combine. Add the water, butter, and oil mixture. Pour into one large floured sheet pan. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.

For frosting, mix softened butter, vanilla, evaporated milk, cocoa, and slowly add confectioner's sugar with blender until creamy. Add nuts.

Pour frosting onto cake while hot, the frosting will ooze into the cake, but turn out thicker than a glaze.

Bon appetit!

&

Thank you for sharing this 2 year journey with me!

My very first post was on the picturesque Beaune, France... check it out HERE!

P.s.
I will be on the road the next few days, so check in with you later.

Father's Day

I apologize for my absence... I swear I wasn't on strike.

My laptop completely crashed on Thursday with what appears to be no option of system restoration, so I'm open to suggestions if anyone has suggestions about malware attacks please share! I've restored to a previous date a couple times, but this time no such luck, and don't want to lose all my photos from Europe.

But all is not total despair, I'm excited that I'm now the proud owner of an iMac desktop, once again! So I'm hoping it will be an investment and excited for a fresh start.

With that, I just want to wish my Dad a Happy Father's Day and thank him for all his support, and just brag about how cool he is...

Cool Facts About My Dear Old Dad (as he refers to himself):

1.  He is a retired undercover cop (if I could only show you those photos of his exciting career)! He used drop me off at school in his undercover car, came to my school with his partner in third grade for show-n-tell and their briefcases of paraphernalia. His office is lined with photos of old busts, celebs he's met, and a certain President he served and protected while passing through town.

2.  He makes his own wine... and cans his own sauces & jams.  I love his tomato raspberry jam, which I've posted about HERE.

3.  He gives pretty good advice, even if I'm too stubborn to take it sometimes.

4.  He has ALWAYS done whatever he could to fly out his daughters each summer and Christmas... which is something he may not know how much I appreciate and recognize that makes him a winning Dad.

My Step-father is pretty cool too!

He was a volunteer firefighter, which HERE is an article accompanying this photo of him in his glory days. He has always loved my mother unconditionally, no matter how difficult she may be at times (I guess she can't help the fact she's a Gemini, no offense to my Gemini readers :) He is also the biggest CHOCO-alohic I know, and has always treated me like his own daughter.

Happy Father's Day to all!

Celebrations

 & Announcements

Tomorrow is my Mom's birthday, but she'll be traveling so I want to wish her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY today and dedicate this post to her...

I'm so excited to share something I'm super proud of and brought tears to my eyes when I got a little package in the mail this weekend. I've mentioned it before, but my friend Kori from Blonde Episodes wrote her first novel, Murder on the Boulevard... which I'm super excited to read... but to see my name on the dedication page was the exact encouragement I needed & the closest I've gotten to my own name on a book... yet! It's empowering to know that in some small way my humble little blog has impacted someone else in some way and makes it all worth while. Plus it encourages me to forge on with my own writing.

So, Mom I dedicate my dedication to you. Thanks for all you support and encouraging me to follow my dreams, even when it terrified you that I left all stability behind, you always held you tongue and willed me to put my dreams first.

Happy Birthday (tomorrow)!

P.s. If you saw my post on Facebook yesterday about my cousin, he survived a 100ft fall and is going home from the hospital today! We are so grateful! You can read the articles HERE or HERE or watch the KNVN News clip HERE.

P.s.s. This week has been outstanding for blog views! Surpassing records each day... Thank you!!!

Saying Goodbye to Dordogne

I'm setting out early this morning, leaving the Dordogne region for Nice, a long day, and hoping to return my rental car in early for a train ticket to avoid the drive, so I can relax and read while enjoying the rest of the journey. (And because the tolls and gas alone will be more than my monthly car payment! - Yes, I highly underestimated the price of a rental car here... with the crappy dollar conversion... Americans need a 2nd mortgage to drive abroad.)

I'll be staying at my first hostel - yikes! Supposed to be one of the top rated in Europe, but still after my first bed and breakfast, chateau, Paris apartment, and London flat, this will be a change. I will remain optimistic though! :)

House outside Beynac.

Beynac Castle.

My evening writings at Les Quatre Pins.

As excited as I am to be home and not living out of a suitcase anymore, or rather unpacking and packing again every week... it gets harder to leave each place and I'm overcome with emotion. It will be especially hard to leave this little place of bliss and my memorable evenings in the warm French sun and delightful company.

Happy 30th Birthday to my sister-in-law Jen!

Baby Sister

Birthday Wishes

A Letter to My Little Sister,

My birthday wishes to you are to follow your dreams, never let anyone tell you what your dreams should be, only give your heart to the most deserving gentlement, but spread love and kindness to all those you encounter, experience life to the fullest but be wise when doing so, realizing mistakes are there to make you learn and grow, but not to be used as an excuse. I wish you all the happiness in the world.

Know that though we are far apart, you are always in my heart, and will forever be my little sister. I love you.

Happy 17th Birthday
 Aubrey!

New Year's Eve

Fashion Friday

Had a bit of a cold this week, but still did my best to dress up a little.
New Year's Resolution? To wear only dresses and skirts for as long as possible, with the exception of leggings and tights. I'm tired of boring work pants!

You may recognize this black bucket hat from the Target commerical... they soooo sold me! Must be the dreamer in me...

I totally wear hats.

Happy New Year's Eve!

A Year in Review

My Year in 2010

I can't even begin to cram a whole year in one post, but this post contains highlights from this year. It has been a year of extreme highs and lows. I've had days that were harder than anything I've ever experienced in my whole life, ones worthy of the phrase, "don't sweat the small stuff".  But I've also had moments where dreams really do come true, like meeting my long time food idol, Giada de Laurentiis, running into another Food Network Star, Jamie Deen, and starting my own business that combines both my love of travel and photography... PHOTOgraphy Getaways. So here are some of the snapshots...

January - Cuddling in the winter.

February - 14 Days of Love. Ski Lesson in Tahoe.

March -  Work, work, work.
April - Meeting my idol, Giada!

May - Meeting Jamie Deen & Our trip to Beaufort, South Carolina.

June - My 2nd trip to Beaufort, and Savannah & Charleston for soul searching...

July - 4th of July in Ohio.

August - Visiting my family inTennessee.

Launching PHOTOgraphy Getaways.

September -  Weekend Photography...

October - Las Vegas & Truckee.

November - Holiday Planning...

& More Photo Shoots

December - Christmas in Beaufort.

More year-end reviews to come this week!
What are some of your highlights this year?
