Good Eats Wednesday

Oktoberfest II:
Apple Strudel

In further celebration of Oktoberfest, I thought some eye candy,

or rather eye dessert, would be in order for this week's Good Eats Wednesday.

This apple strudel has my mouth watering and in anticipation

to give this recipe a whirl...

The recipe is from the Berghoff Cookbook via ivillage.com

"Directions: This popular dessert takes its name from the flaky pastry used to wrap around the filling like a strudel, the old German word for "whirlpool". In Germany, it was a traditional harvest-time dessert and still is today during Munich's Oktoberfest. Strudel is best served the same day it is baked, and warming it for 10 minutes in a 350 degree F oven (never in a microwave) enhances it, especially if you serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients:

1 ¼ cups apple juice

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1 ½ pound Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced ¼ inch thick (5 cups)

½ cup dark seedless raisins

3 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/3 cup chopped pecans

4 sheets phyllo dough

1/3 cup melted butter

3 tablespoons fine dry breadcrumbs

Confectioners' sugar, for garnish

Vanilla ice cream, for garnish

Directions1. In a small bowl, create a slurry by combining ¼ cup of the apple juice with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch; mix until smooth and set aside. 2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, cook the apples with the remaining apple juice, and the raisins, sugar and cinnamon until the apples are tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir the cornstarch slurry (it may have settled) and add to the apple mixture, stirring constantly until smooth and lump free. Simmer 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and cool. Stir in the pecans, cover and chill. 3. Preheat the over to 450 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.4. Lay out one phyllo sheet on a clean, flat, lightly floured surface. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of dry bread crumbs. Repeate this procedure with two more layers of phyllo, butter and crumbs. Top with the fourth sheet of phyllo. Spread the apple filling evenly onto phyllo surface, leaving a ½ inch clean edge on all sides. Roll into a log, folding edges at each end beneath the log, and brush with melted butter. Carefully place the strudel on the prepared baking sheet, seam side down. Bake the strudel for 15 to 18 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool for 15 minutes before cutting into 2-inch slices and sprinkling with confectioners' sugar just before serving. Serve plain or with ice cream.

Check out Chef In You.com for their amazing Apple Strudel food photography and recipe for homemade dough. I would like to give this recipe a try during the holidays, when there is more time for homemade dough.

Although, "strudel" is a German word, the dessert is typically associated with being Austrian. The oldest strudel recipe from 1696 is found today at the Viennese City Library. For the Austrian version, the dough is supposed to be so thin, you can "read a love letter through it!"

For those Sophia Coppola Marie Antoinette lovers, remember the mocking line when young Marie met her new royal family for the first time and one of the court ladies said behind her back, "I hope you like Strudel." :)

Either way, it looks delicious!!!

Happy 70th Birthday Wizard of Oz!

The fully restored DVD was released today in honor of it's milestone.

It surely has made a place in everyone's heart!

Has anyone ever seen The Return to Oz?

Of course it doesn't compare to the original. As a child, it scared the living day lights out of me. But there was something about it, that was intriguing.

Oktoberfest

Clink, Clink... Cheers!

Photo from Rueters

It's that time of year again! I have a friend over in Munich, Germany right now celebrating Oktoberfest, and I'm so jealous. This is on my Bucketlist to visit Munich, Germany for Oktoberfest. I did get to visit Germany earlier this year and saw some beautiful castles and charming towns along the Rhine river.

I LOVE Oktoberfest outfits! I've been teasing the boyfriend all year that I would make us matching outfits. Last year we went to a local fest and had a blast.

On a Sunday...

The Florida Sky

When I first moved to Florida, I was in awe of the beautiful sky. I grew up in a smoggy area of California, where it rarely gets this blue. Then I went to college in Oregon where it is rainy and gray a good majority of the year. So, I have a huge appreciation for the beautiful fluffly cumulonimbus clouds and bright blue sky.

I also love the summers here, when the afternoon thunderstorms roll in. It does get hot and muggy, but the late night heat lightening storms are a true gift from above. Sometimes they last 30-40 minutes of the sky lighting up behind the clouds every few seconds. It's better than any fireworks display, especially knowing it's an act of nature.

Please excuse the telephone lines. :)

Fruiticious L.A shopsville

I think I am my mind is wondering while my eye is turning lazy in synchronicity today... somehow drifted onto this Las Vegas shop called Fruition which i think its a new and vintage designer boutique. Don't really know anything about Vegas style- but I am quite liking the 'so wrong meets so right' ghetto-bling trashy yet mildy abstract vibe... am i describing an M.I.A groupie?
Here are some gems from the shop blog;

JULI GRBAC: PRETTY FRILLY LITTLE THINGS

Hail thy to Brisbanite fashion princess ( not quite yet a fashion queen) Juli Grbac! Did thy fashion homework, and clawed with my french tips, bits and pieces of fashion info's about J. Grbac 'designista'. But was dangerously nodding off into a 'beauty sleep' on my beloved throne... that's how possibly bored I was... prying my Chanel lathered mascara peepers open.

Click click.. right mousy click... to the fashion webby of Grbac http://www.juligrbac.com.au/. Underneath extra large Christian Dior eye candies... I cast upon a wish wash of airy fairy creations. (Princess) J.Grbac, her latest S/S 2010 collection didn't really do much to stir the fashion pot..... I graciously tap my M. Blahnik heels in unison.. just to give Grbac a small fashion approval, because it's 'oh so pretty', and makes me feel like tip toeing delicately.

Nothing really different???. except for the extra credit of winning that t.v show... ( yes.. Project.. .. you know what a year back). Most likely, swearing upon my dangling Samantha Wills ear ornament creations.. ( because I love it to bits), Grbac has merely resurrected the fashion cravings of 'femininity'.

You know what moi is raving on about.. the fun, flirty, frilly, " ooops I did it again.. lalalala'" come girly feeling effect. No reel 'bang wow ' factor felt underneath thy heels... instead just a notion of..." well at least it's all wearable?, but tediously flat... my fashion buds aren't tickled in the faintest way... unfortunately. Boring bits here and there.......but hey.. if there's a market for it.. then why not???... but then again.... why!!!????.

Grbac may have been a topic of champers conversation last year or so ago.. but this year.. Grbac may just be struggling to stay in the 'five minutes of fashion fame limelight', unless of course Grbac has an 'epiphany' fashionista moment.. and pulls out a 'wow' factor for all to saviour!

This princess 'designista' has a whole lot more to her...( moi believes)... but has yet to find that 'ah ha' moment with the collection.. although she thinks she has... but my fashion brain believes not quite yet!.. a few more season's and the inspiration hopefully will come hitting down in fashion thunder bolts on J.Grbac 'designista'!

My fashion truth tongue to dear J. Grbac?, begin with your webby dear!, it almost bores one to tears! For someone to have just walked off television fashion heaven.........., her webby? 'not so impressive!'.....I'm praying on my 'Mother Maria' ensemble, that quite possibly your makeup team is whipping up a new look for the webby.... as moi speaks!!!..if not..., then do so now!.. and then just maybe... maybe in the hopes of high fashion heaven, J.Grbac will pull out a little 'ooohh ahh stunner' collection.

Maybe.. frills come studs and chains???.. who knows......... just lay off the peach and brown.. it was done to death..during the Collette Dinnigan phase.. ( remember sequins and beading's galore?).. don't do us fashion lovers to death with frills and pale wearable gowns... put in a few "can't really wear.. but looks just as lush to have and look at!' numbers in the collection.. just so the fashion lovers can have a few non- wearable pieces to lust after. Don't give us 'predictable and typical' darling... give the fashion lovers 'wishful thinking'... the collection had too many 'I can wear that' feelings. Instead, bring on a kind of fashion king..... 'Alex Perry' moment.... where it's predictable that Mr A.Perry will do wonderful floor sweeping or mini thigh high numbers.... but the 'wow' factor is there each and every time! ( your fashion followers will always love you Mr A. Perry xoxox mwah).

Fashion kiss though to dear J.Grbac ( mwah mwah xxx) for readjusting our fashion tastes for a brief moment.. for all things, prancy and clancy.. sitting pretty little thing.

Fashion forward confidence darling..... click clacking behind you all the way.... Madam me.. is only here to make you 'survive' in the fashion shark infested arena dear!

Style rating: Juli Grbac S/S 2010 collection - Smile ( Nice but bored)

P.S Mirror mirror on the wall.. what is of the hopes of J. Grbac?....... "Be very wary, your beautiful creations and creative talents may just slip into that typical category of "school formal shopping centre buys"...... and then into obscurity.. keep the fashion head alive" xoxo.

13 YEAR OLD STYLE GURU! YAY FOR TAVI!

Look at this little stylista! Introducing little Tavi Gevinson ... a tween-teen fashionista in her own right! Her styling voice has created a 'hum drum' of fashion noise in the fashion arenas of worldwide!
So I did a bit of snooping and to my fashion surprise, Little Miss Tavi not only pulls off this weird sense of ... ecclectic vintage style, but her fashion tongue is quite advanced.
Tavi has had the luxury of being flown to view New York fashion week and detail her delectable finds - such a quirky little fashionista.

My fashion tongue believes little Tavi is merely a teen-tween exploring her innate ability to play 'dress ups' with older persons clothes!!!! Only a 13 year old stylista could pull off such a fashion blasphemy ... can one imagine if a random was to walk down the fashion streets with 'guitar straps' styled as head pieces, cut out newspaper strips and clag glued them onto our dads white business shirts ... that just maybe in the faintest fashion main stream.. that we would be hailed as a little fashionista come Anna Wintour?? I can snap my clutch tote shut and declare that in no fashion time would this happen, instead we'll probably be subjected to psycho analysis tests ... and dubbed 'insane in the fashion brain!, la la la la la"
I must declare at the top of my fashion voice that Tavi is definitely singing a tune of her own in the fashion stakes of todayness ( if there is such a word... oh well, there is now). Miss Tavi looks so much like a little old lady in a little body - so cute, yet the face speaks 'fashion wiseness (once again my own fash. language) beyond her years.

Waving to Tavi from my fashion throne ... bravo little deary for creating a fashion buzz, now go back and do your homework! xoxo

To my colleagued stylistas and fashionistas who have booed and bogged down poor little Tavi by declaring, "what is the big deal about Tavi?" - well the big deal is, little Tavi has already cemented her fashion position within the 'fashion savvy world' - so where in the world are you??? Jealous I suppose??? Please just let her play dress ups ... in peace.

Style rating: Tavi Gevinson - Bravo (loving it, air kisses all around)

du du du du dahhhhhhh- LFW

The trademark sound of who wants to be a millionaire... yeah LFW is over (apart form all the masculine stuffs of course) and what a damn shame my multiple attempts at winning cameras in obscure competitions didn't pay off in time to document any of it!

I crumbled in awe yesterday when Nicola Formichetti introduced himself to me and I became temporarily disabled an unable to shake his hand probably (flashback to a story someone once told me about Tom Fords philosophy on a handshake- he apparently said "never work with someone who doesn't give eye contact with a firm handshake" while shaking this guys hand aggressively) grrrr, temporary self-hatred was soon washed away by more free Sourz shots in luminous shades... ICK

HOWEVER,
this backfired when the nice people from Luna & Curious came by and I spilt a glass of this purple stuff and it splashed the little baby they had in tow, now that I am completely aware of my v. non-ironic Geekdom I am going to make some 5-minute clothes that I can use to try and dress myself up into a visual play on this unavoidable status.

ARE 5-MINUTE CLOTHES A GOOD IDEA? I have had quite alot of use outta that gingham human pillow case I made the other day- twas Vivienne Westwood who promoted wearing sheets last season with her toga party style post jumping in a giant bath of autumnal silk-dye....

OH WAIT, WISH I COULD DO THIS:

FASHION TOGA PARTY AND HUMAN DYE BATHS
MADE INTO SHORT MOVIE IN A SET THAT LOOKS LIKE IT MIGHT BE MADE OUT OF PORCELAIN, ALL MODELS WITH OILY GLOSSY FILM ON THEIR SKIN SO THEIR BODIES STAY FLESHY-TONED AND THE FILTER SHIFTS TO CREATE SOME KIND OF KALEIDOSCOPE VISUAL TRIP AND TRANSFORMS ALL THE COLOURS IN THE TOGA/MARBLED BATHS LIKE SWISH SWISH...

Fashion Forward Friday - "Easton Pearson, fashion flaring pair"

Fashion Forward Friday is flapping it's homage to the Brisbane fashion duo 'Easton Pearson'!

Recently I threw on my 'heelio's' swung on my Chloe arm candy and skipped my way into the much muttered about 'Easton Pearson Exhibition' at the lux GOMA ( Gallery of Modern Art).

Moi, was feeling excited and elated... because up until now I have never really lent towards the fashion offering's of this fashion flaring pair. Maybe because they serve up their fashion to such a select fashion group... those who like the 'loud and proud' effect, with bold canvas like print fabrics...... reminds me very much like a modernised version of the 'Ken Done' era.. except, no Koala's and gala's here.... no only just big pineapples jutting out of the front door signage panel of the exhibition?!

Fashion gasping - 'what was with the pineapples?'... the only stylish explanatin I could think of, was maybe... just maybe.... because Queensland is their first and forever mother love country, so they need to polish the apples of good old Queensland Government... excuse me or should I say 'polish the pineapples', well I guess the pair had to pay back homage to the good old sunny Qld and the government, for putting on this 'fashion art showing'.

Click clacking my way into the hollowed display.... it is safe to declare, that my fashion eyes were clearly pleased with the sight before me. Dear fashionista's close your eyes for just a second and picture.... scattered mannequined dummies, torsos and busts suspended from oh so sky high ceilings and clothed in a selection of garments of what I presume the Easton Pearson gang believe as to be the best of their twenty year career, mounted story boards, snippets of the pairs career activities painted on the display walls and last but not least... the dangling lanterns..... oh what a dimly lit mood that created, very calming a surreal, similar to that of a quiet dimly lit restaurant.

Truly a breathtaking fashion effect! Truly a showcasing of fashion in 'art form'. Any fashionista & stylista would have loved the 'up close and personal' effect... I had the pleasure of weaving endlessly between each garments, casting my fashion eyes on the immense detailing and lux textiles created by this fashion flaring pair. The only fashion music one could hear, would have to be the 'click clacking' of my heels and other heels of fashionista's just saviouring the fashion moment.

I must admit to my fashion conscience... If not for the creative interior of this 'tres chic' exhibition I may not have enjoyed it as much.

There were definately 'fashion cringeing' moments, when I thought "what on earth is that doing there?", or " oh nice.. but why?". However my fashion tastes were tickled at the sight of some very fashion forward 'capelletes'.......... I could just picture the fashion worthy sight of teaming up the capelletes with their odd and few 'sweeping' evening gowns.

The fashionable stand out moment, would have to simply be the display of heavily embellished 'bolero' type jackets long and short... with intense detailing of embellishments drawn to the buttoms and collars.... that's about it really... quite pretty and different, I suppose.

Thumbs up to the initiation of the 'kiddies corner'... as I click clacked silently back and forth, I made my way into an area that was obviously 'nurturing' the younger fashion ducklings' of today xoxo. Bravo to this!, little mini's were seated around clothing little he and she cardboard cut outs. I even braved the fashion mini's and created one of my own..xoxo.

My fashion tongue, is not to willingly quick to rave on about the actual fashion displaying's.... ( definately better than some of the S/S collection for this season! ), but will give a fashion nod to the creative design of the exhibition...... truly a unique fashion tasting, that has taken 'fashion viewing' to a new cultural and high end fashion purpose!

Here are my fashion truth's about Easton Pearson's 2009 Spring Summer creations: Looks like something that only Byron Bay 'er communities would slap on... although there were a few pieces that that grabbed my eye.... such as the lush green 'Pluto coat' and the 'ashi top' and 'bril skirt'... not so loving the 'Alaini top' and 'drawstring pan'.. too pyjama looking for me... it'll make me feel far too lazy. To view, park your fashion noseyness @ - http://www.eastonpearson.com/

P.S. Maybe MBFF ( Brisbane) could try and snag a sponsorship deal to stage their fashion fest at the GOMA!!!, and you'll be better off using the suspended mannequins! xoxo.

Style rating: Easton Pearson ( Exhibition at GOMA) - Applaud
Gleefully sashaying out of the exhibition with arm candy in tote!

LIFW SS 2010- Celebrating 10 years of Fashion

The first day of Lakme Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010 had an unusual and timeless treat for the fashion lovers in the city - a spectacular show called “Lakmé and IMG celebrate 10 years of fashion”
presented by Samira Habitats. Covering the past 10 years of the fashion week, the theme of the show was Then - Now – Forever: with 20 Lakme Grand Finale designers presenting their looks from “back then”, to now and then finally, the timeless, “forever” looks. The show ran for a full 45 minutes and featured some stunning designs from some of India’s most well-known and prolific designers. Though every design that made a round of the runway is worth writing about, there are some creations that made a noticeable impact on the fashion fraternity present.

Bobby and Manju Grover’s Forever design, a chiffon shot silk grey gown with a metallic Lurex laser cutwork bodice with a dramatic headgear.

Monapali’s Forever, a white net sari with a kantha and mirror work borders.

Rohit Bal’s Forever, his favourite 16 tiered full circle kurta in ivory.

Arjun Khanna’s Forever, a mirror work embellished jacket teamed with a crushed panelled lehenga with gold motifs.

J J Valaya’s Forever, a floral ruffled headgear cum choli with white zardozi lehenga.

Tarun Tahiliani’s fringed dress and gown with corded off- shoulder neckline for Now and for Forever, a draped bronze satin backless dress.

Malini Ramani’s Forever, a fierce, tiger stripes backless mini in gold and black.

Ritu Beri’s dramatic Spanish inspired skirt, presented as her Forever design.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s Forever design, a velvet chiffon multi print skirt, blouse and bolero in earthy tones.

Finally, as 20 of India’s most creative minds took the stage, there was, as expected, a standing ovation, marking the end of the fashion event of the decade.

Kolkata Fashion Week - Ritu Kumar

The Czarina of Indian Haute Couture, Ritu Kumar, presented her collection on the first day of the Kolkata Fashion Week. Featuring her characteristic designs with exquisite blending of the Indian handicrafts with contemporary mediums, Kumar’s collection opened in black and gold, with varied silhouettes to suit the modern Indian woman. The collection comprised of evening gowns, long tunics, chogas, kutchi gathered coats worn over loose pants, all incorporating the exquisite skills of a hugely skilled designer. The theme was taken further by marrying the Indian aesthetic with coats, trench and bomber jackets, all trimmed with leather and worn with tights and boots. The color palette was rich and vivid, in the true Ritu Kumar style. The designer called her collection a tribute to the craftsmen of West Bengal, as she marked it as a celebration of forty years of the Ritu Kumar label.
