Fiona Shaw

Fiona Shaw: "Do you get worried? I worry. There are many things that can go wrong. At least we can talk about them… that helps keep things working. Just don’t talk too much; stand within the blast radius but close your eyes. Words are tricky things. Language is a system without steadfast rules; ever changing, impossible to discuss without using it. It’s scary. It’s the only thing that allows us to distance ourselves from life and its overwhelming events. Best not scratch too deep and ruin the magic."

"Our desire to believe in constructed systems of reference hides paranoia over the impossibility of ultimate understanding and communication. Language and science provide an appealing cover for the gaps between individuals, with each other and with the world. Both systems are ever-changing and evolving; being proved ‘wrong’ and something else proclaimed ‘true’. But we don’t like to think that our tiny bit of knowledge on the grand timeline of all possible pasts and futures may be ultimately as longstanding as… well, all the stuff we can’t remember any more. Innumerable years of effort wasted."

Walter Robinson

Walter Robinson: "I use my work to investigate the ways that we create identities out of the products we consume. Branding, corporate logos, mascots, cartoon characters, advertising text and signage are the semiotic sources I draw from. To undermine the power of product logos that surround us, I tweak their scale or context, or combine them in disjunctive pairs. Sometimes I restage contemporary geopolitical events, using childhood icons to provoke the shock of corrupted innocence." (via)

Pins | Paul Insect

Paul
’s work has evolved considerably. Victorian graphics have been replaced by Dada-ist collages fusing adolescence, aggression, and rough-around-more-than-just-the-edges pornography. These motifs are tempered by a joyous use of colour and an ambitious style. Equally, the images are provoking and provocative: dripping as much with sensitivity and gravitas as they are with sex and death. Moreover, they are a window onto the mind of the frustrated modern male: boiling over with unkempt aggression and sexuality, but yearning somehow for a higher moral purpose than the gradual accumulation of acceptance. Clowns crack and go on the rampage; kids in cowboy outfits contemplate the worth of their peers; and babies are contented to consider the consequences of the quantum age. Daniel Arsham

'Daniel Arsham’s art is an enigma that is resolved through contact with an exterior on which he draws for inspiration. By incorporating various aesthetic fields like landscape and architecture into the domain of art, he demonstrates how art wields power over other fields.'

LucyandBart

'LucyandBart is a collaboration between Lucy McRae and Bart Hess described as an instinctual stalking of fashion, architecture, performance and the body. They share a fascination with genetic manipulation and beauty expression. Unconsciously their work touches upon these themes, however it is not their intention to communicate this. They work in a primitive and limitless way creating future human shapes, blindly discovering low – tech prosthetic ways for human enhancement.'

The Emotion Organ by Amanda Steggell

Synaesthesia is the name of a rare clinical anomaly where people experience unusual and very real sensations, such as the taste of shapes, or the colour of sound.

'The Emotion Organ is a synaesthetic simulacrum machine where players can explore the sensational interplay of feeling, seeing, hearing, smelling and motion. It is also a time machine - a re-engineered pump organ from 1895 that combines both old and emerging technology and builds upon a trajectory of several centuries-worth of ideas about synaesthetic phenomena.
Without electricity it can be played as a conventional musical instrument, but when plugged in the organ produces varying combinations and intensities of sound, light, colour, scent, vibration and movement. When played it stimulates a highly subjective, cause-and-effect sensory immersion. When experienced as a spectator, the subjective affect of the player is modulated through the hypnotic visual effects of a propeller-screen, processed organ sounds and emitted scents.'
