McCannNightShift | NAG #4

Come see 5 of Romania’s finest street artists and illustrators of the moment – Aitch, Irlo, Noper, Saddo and Sinboy – work the Night Shift at McCann Erickson Pop-Up Gallery. We put in hard hours during the day; they take over during the night.

The result is nocturnal, dreamy, light and magical, which borders dark, violent, nightmarish and straight-up horror. Showcasing some of their work on paper, carton and wood, drawing directly on the walls of the Gallery, experimenting with characters and symbols and playing with lighting of the space, the artists will go for a unique atmosphere all throughout the show.”

McCann Erickson Pop-Up Gallery pops up for two weeks only, June 11-25. On the opening night of June 11 we are officially one of destinations inside an all-in-all exciting night for art.  Expect: a live performance by all 5 artists, special prices for special pieces, good beats, vibrant crowd, give-aways and refreshments as they last. Night Shift as it should be.

“The creative scene in Romania is one of the most vibrant and exciting in Europe. This directory was put together to illustrate what makes it so special. A listing of 100 of the most talented artists in Romania today, from conceptual art to contemporary dance, literature and theatre to music and fashion, it’s a snapshot of an entire generation – the Romanian New Wave. Every single artist between these pages is part of the reason why Romania is such an exciting place to be right now. It’s indicative of just how much talent there is in the Romanian New Wave.”

Rokolectiv ‘09

ROKOLECTIV ‘09
FESTIVAL FOR ELECTRONIC MUSIC AND RELATED ARTS

The fourth edition of Rokolectiv - festival for electronic music and related arts - kicks off between 10th and 12th of April 2009. Over 20 artists will participate with concerts, installations, and special events.

The first two days of the festival are hosted by a new spectacular venue - Bucharest’s creative commodities exchange The Ark, a neonesque industrial building reconverted into space for contemporary culture. As usual, MNAC supports the last day of the festival.

Rokolectiv presents outstanding live acts of the moment, most of them a Bucharest premiere, starting with the rare appearance of the Norwegian dizzying disco magician Lindstrom, followed by Canadian house experimentalist Frivolous and Berlin’s biggest deepologist Prosumer, in an obsessively dancing Saturday night.

On top of everything, to spice up the magic during the night program - some floral and animal interactivity, and a bit of playfulness with Lego sounds…

Friday is a dubstep goes techno night with special appearances from Shackleton, 2562 and Deadbeat, under the close supervision of the Romanian producer of the moment TRG with a mind-blowing DJ set.

Fennesz brings on Sunday some of the Black Sea’s waves to MNAC, following the recent release of his new album. An eclectic night completed by a display of Optical Machines, a grand finale combustion by the noisiest neo-metal funksters MoHa, and a spacecraft managed by half of Zombie Zombie - Etienne Jaumet - and the Romanian duo Minus si Ion, in a quest for a deeper sound.

Minus: “I’ve been making tracks for a few years, trying to focus on the emotional aspect of music rather than its technical side. The style ranges from 8-bit and oldschool-electro to dub, downtempo and ambiental music with vague references to maths, fuzzy childhood memories and old video games."

Nicolae Comanescu | dust 2 dust

"Art seems to employ a myriad of textures and materials – and even no materials at all – in order to express itself. Yet there is something which has been used from the very start of this thing called art, when our cave-dwelling ancestors began leaving their spiritual mark on this world. I am talking about dust, about dirt, earth, humus. The Neolithic "artist" imprinted his thought firstly and foremost by using charcoal and various types of dust, preferably of the reddish variety. The results are stunning even nowadays, after millennia and millennia. And they are born out of one of the most elemental materials available to humankind, something that just lies around in every corner and, indeed, everywhere one cares to look. [...] The art with dust I would like to talk about is the sort of art that is really connected to people. We can add to this small but nevertheless illustrious gallery our own Nicolae Comanescu, the painter of Romanian disconnected realities."

"The "Dust 2.0" series goes one step further in showing us the darker, even more serious side of Nicolae Comanescu, and this is more than likely aided by restricting the chromatics to various shades of dust. But we have to observe another preoccupation in the artist's mid. These new works depicting the neighbourhood of Berceni literally convey the life of the artist, and I would make so bold as to compare them to Utrillo's Montmartre paintings. What we see is the artist's immediate environment, the places where he spends a great deal of his time, and where some of inspiration comes from.[...] I think that Nicolae is the first Romanian artist to treat this underrated medium with the respect it deserves. One of the basest things in life, dirt, has been elevated to the rank of artistic endeavour. The metaphor-lover would go on to say that by this act, the artist has emphasised the transitoriness of life, and that all we are is dust in the wind and from dust we come and to dust we shall return, or even that life is dirt." (by Mihai Risnoveanu)

Kid606 @ Arenele Romane

KID606 aka Miguel Depedro, born 1979 in Venezuela and raised in California, dropped out of school and life to make music and run around the world bringing his uniquely reckless fucked up and beautiful music to our fucked up and beautiful world (one dance party at a time). Inspired by the best of electronica, punk, jungle, hiphop, Bass, dancehall and techno, kid606 fuses it all together with a love of pop culture that andy warhol would approve. Critically acclaimed releases (both legal and illegal) on ipecac, mille plateaux, fatcat, 555, his own tigerbeat6 label as well as remixes for artists as disparate as depeche mode, the locust, peaches, and super furry animals have painted a clear portrait of kid606 as a inspired, angry and iconoclastic artist more concerned with emotional content then popularity and unwilling to be pigeonholed in any vacant scene or soulless musical genre. Open your ears and shout along, or close your eyes and dance but always expect the unexpected.

anim'est 07 | International Animation Film Festival, 2nd edition

animest 07 / 5-16 October / Bucharest

What is anim’est? Its aim is that of facilitating contact with artistic creations, with major animation schools all over the world, with imagination and experiment put into images, colour and sound. It is not a multimedia festival, it is not a display of what computers can do, it is a praise of art, imagination and skill.
