Item Idem- Miscellaneous designer

So curious is this person -that I had to scrawl through all of his press cuttings to find out what he actually does, dispite my fascination resting on his the undefinable representation of an idea or object which has been branded almost as its purpose.
In an interview for Stimuli magazine- he described his strategy as 'Viral Communication', creating project which shake the boundries between media, art and fashion. Inspired by Andy Warhols approach to the Art of Business and commercial design- it appears he sees himself as a collaborative tool, a collider perhaps... and just the idea that someone devotes themself to evolutionary creative processes.
The element of guarding that is necessary for the conservation of a Fashion brand (person/label) often means that collaboration can often be strategic and token, but although there is an art to this- I really beleive the future is in a kind of accessability. Not to pander or to provide but to react and evolve and participate with creatives of other mediums, but also the prolotariate of the Apple-TV generation.
I think it is inevitable and essential that the Fashion industry moves toward taking inspiration from the fast-paced supply and demand for CONTRIBUTION & REACTION. Item Idem IS the future!

Daniel Arsham

'Daniel Arsham’s art is an enigma that is resolved through contact with an exterior on which he draws for inspiration. By incorporating various aesthetic fields like landscape and architecture into the domain of art, he demonstrates how art wields power over other fields.'

GRACE JONES = FASHION GLADIATOR

Good morning!
I really have seen no music video which i love more than slave to the rythym- the visual world it presents is honestly the most delicious thing i have ever witnessed, and i love that it exists because of Grace Jones...
So everyone's going on about her come-back and adornement of philip treacy creations, and I think she may be responsible if the MASSIVE HEADGEAR trend strides on and upward in the coming year.
Personally i love her pride- her gladiator stance- i think the flimsy hunch will have to be flattened by this in model shoots of the near future. Yeah, Yeah American apparell will never stop the promotion of 'the boyfriend's' clothes on a hunched 'caress me im so careless- no, i really couldn't care less!" kinda-girl. Actually i am into that fragile floppy look, but it just gets blown out of the water when next to an image of a glossy-skinned sexual gladiator.
The androgynous boy/girl-look may be staple amongst the east-london peoples these days, but how androgynous is it? Really its more like a girly-gay but non-sexual sensitive scandanavian designer-look. Grace Jones offers something else-theres nothing flimsy or questionable about her sexuality- its simply doesnt matter what it is- she is not trying to be anything than in her own skin- filling it out and using it well ( and O.M.G- at 60! If anyone has seen the 'Harold & Maude' 70's movie- just compare her with Maude for a minute!).

High Heel Marathon --- Would you? Could you?

When I bought my first pair of precariously high heels, a friend gave me a long lecture on the harm they could do to my back... I went ahead and bought two more pairs, and wore my lovely stilettos everywhere. I went for walks wearing them, I went shopping, and even went to college wearing high heels. I lived my life a good few inches higher than rest of the world. Then one day, just as suddenly my love for high heels had begun, it faded. Ephemeral... yes. But the comfort of well-structured flats was difficult to resist. And till a few months back, I lived my life pretty grounded. Till I saw this gorgeous, to-die-for pair of lovely heels in a shade of orange I had never dared even look at before. And the heels were back in my life.

But even at the top of my affair with the heels, I wouldn't have dreamed of running around in them, leave alone running an actual marathon waring heels over 3-inches. But I guess $5000 cash prize and a pair of Terry Biviano heels might change all that. Like it did for hundreds of women who took part in a 80 meter world record attempt stiletto race, held at the Overseas Passenger Terminal on September 2, 2008 in Sydney, Australia. The previous world record of 150 runners, held by Holland, was broken by a neat margin, with 265 people participating in the Sydney race. I say "people" because some men were spotted running too! Well, Like I said $5000 in cash...

But High heels Marathon? And the crazy sport has been doing rounds across the world, with London and Manhattan having done their own rounds of "charity" high heel marathons. I guess, soon enough they will find their way into Mumbai. We already have parties for charity, so why not a marathon... And there will be enough sponsors- Relispray, Iodex, Orthopedic Departments of top hospitals.

Any takers?

DU DU, DU DU , DU DU DU DUM! FASHION PREDICTION.....

BEAT GEN HAIR, BEAT GEN HAIR ON GIRLS.. yeah year all the hot shoreditch boys have a sort of 'hairspray ran out' version, but seriously the girls need to get rid of the aggypile and sart sleeping with a roller on the fringe in the night-time, hack everything off and then messy up the leftover WONDERQUIF!

THE WONDERQUIF... personally wont be doing it, just loving it from the sidelines, from the 149 up and down kingsland road 2009... I can get excited about this- 'my scraggly hair got caught in the hedgerow- look- its so gothic!' trend- when actually its a lazy move on from the nu rave -'Its shit but thats cool right?'.

Yeah, so refinement in hair- swift motion of fine comb- and some more heavy eyelashes TADA!
it also got me thinkihg about why the hell they havnt made the 'On the Road' book into a movie... and low and behold the creenplay has been written and the movie is going to be made for release next year... so defo 2009 is going to be about the BEAT GENERATION-WATCH THIS SPACE!

BLANDY BEIGE

Yeah, so beige on beige on beige on beige- its like watching wind blowing desert across desert... bland but kind of romantic in its purity (right?)
I cant get particularly excited about this 'Washed Out' trend which is emerging for SS09- but i think this because with my pastey face doesnt benefit from the monotone colour vibe...
Even so, Rodarte seem to have plastered beige foundation on their models faces to match the beige on beige ensembles... and for some of us the make-up wont be necessary in acheiving this look.

Although they have some dip dye colour splashes thrown in for token contrast- the hand-cut leather tights seem to have stolen the compositional focus with the harsh fishnet-style lines drawing all the attention to the legs... If i were to invest in any item from this collection it would be the black tights with an oversized john smedley silk weave jumper= PREPPY SEX LEGS!

Goan Gems

Goa is a delightful place to be in. I love the typical Goan architecture clearly visible in the churches and houses across Goa. I loved the liberal usage of colors and tiles in the construction. Loads of blue, yellow and red with an occasional orange and even pink. Large houses with spacious rooms and big windows for ventilation are a welcome change from a usually claustrophobic Mumbai. I came back with such beautiful images floating in my head. I wish I could share all of them, but I guess Goa can't really be captured in pictures. Neverthless, I am sharing a few photographs. Hope you will like them.

MARK FAST & LONDON FASHION WEEK LOVE

IM THINKING...
Mark Fast is definately one to watch this fashion week, there are few people so devoted to the non sculptural knitwear techniques which still hugg the body suffieciently for this great era of the body-sock ( I say era- i really mean demand and admiration). Normally i dont love such flesh-happy attire- but there is huge potential for layering with his stuff, and a great many organic patterns for the eye to wander over.

London fashion week is pending and i am EXCITED, I'm not usually this excitied but its like the britney comeback- everyone wants it to happen dispite the fact people love to be sceptical about it... this is why americans love us so much- we have same optimism against the odds. Maybe if people start banging on about the predictability of NY fashion week a bit more they would up their game with some serious suprises!
I have been reading much about the promotional buzz surrounding LFW not perhaps supporting the easily marketable success of young designers which has been spilling into the press the last few years... and that confidence in the event is lacking despite this.

Although you can hardly expect the sure-fire exceptional execution of each show as a grand cultural event (as in Paris), there are always going to be more suprises because the schedule allows more space for the up-and coming. London after all... is the fountain for innovative ideas as my old tutot used to say, but often these innovators get offers they cannot refuse from rival fashion capitals.

Personally, I don't mourn the loss of our biggest names from the schedule, I think the turnover of great designer produce should be emphasised and promoted. I mean, I love the way fashion houses are nurtured in Paris because of the great respect they have for it as an art, but here in London the people of 'great ideas' are recognised and honoured much before they have reached the peak of refinement, thus providing the element of suprise.

THE WIDOW HAT

DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA
Perhaps its just me but i really love that age-old advert for Scottish widow insurance (bear with me) with the super mysterious-looking woman wooshing around randomly in a cape- it was a seriously good look- so when i saw that Austrian mllinary designer Molly Yestadt had created a similar and equally dramatic headpeice-

Generally i think Austrian people have special magic in their genes-not on the von trap family legacy alone...
Austrian womenswear designer Anna Aichinger's 'Showreel Collection' for AW08/09 Collection
is full of BLACK tones and confidence.. again i am drawn to the twinkling sequin lightshow like a queen to drag, but somehow the seriousness of her collection makes it look so wearable i am thinking DAYWEAR for the mildly confident?

Pamela klaffke's DRESSING UP BOX

THE CLOSET IS MY PLAYGROUND

APPARENTLY I used to take my dressing up box quite seriously... when i was a kid (they tell me). It seemed like a huge bucket of gems at the time- someone's wedding dress and my mum's old tutu and some what would now be pretty-sought after vintage- though all that remains now are probably some hashed up barbie clothes i made out of them when Ariel the little mermaid needing some alternative outfits... anyway time to travel out of the dream pipe- or is it?
Pamela Klaffke uses lo-fi camera techniques to recapture that place of mind magic with the use of super-amazing props and outfits in her photography-a stylist and a creator of stories (fiction)
Perhaps i should start gathering up the remains of fly-tipping outside oxfam after all for funtimes on a sunday?

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are two pretty lttle nymph's who know how to get the SWAMPED YET STILL HOT look to perfection- and acheive dressing-up box chic. Their understanding of how to make this femeniine on slight bones is clear within the collection they have consulted on for 'Elizabeth and James'. I am excited to see more from them and although they started off only licencing ranges under their names as kids- they have been keeping their fingers warm in the fashion pie ever since and i would be surpised if they lend themselves & ideas more generously to the industry over time... the baloon shirt is a serious all-year rounder for those who like the clean-crisp grandaddy look!
